The topic this Monday on The Writing Mama Show - Gluten Free Kids.

This week come meet author Christy E. Bykowski and learn about her kid friendly celiac disease awareness picture book, Gluten-Free Me: Beckmin Goes to School January 2014. “Beckmin Goes to School” is Bykowski’s first children’s book and was inspired by her middle son Beckmin, who was diagnosed with celiac disease at 18 months, after extensive sickness and a series of hospital visits. Since then, Christy has worked with Beckmin through the everyday challenges of being a kid with this disease, dealing with his frustrations and his own learning curve as to what celiac disease is, how to explain it and what it means in his day-to-day life. Beckmin’s stories, written to help children define, understand and explain celiac disease, are meant to be both empowering and educational for kids and their parents.

Publisher: Halo Publishing, Int.
ISBN Number: ISBN 13: 978-1-61244-219-8
Genre: Children
Publication Date: January 2014
Page count: 25

Synopsis of book: This friendly book is a fun way children can start to become proficient readers by reading about one of their biggest worries- bedtime! This book is a reminder to never be afraid of your monsters and has helpful hints for parents to help their children by exploring with early reading strategies at home.

Our Thoughts: We loved this book. It was not only fun to read, but also had a teachers guide at the back of the book to create a wonderful learning experience with little ones. You not only find questions to discuss with your little ones, but also a few added benefits to help with speech and vocabulary as well.

The illustrations add to the story without making the book scary as everything happens in the dark and when most kids seem to be scared. The context allows parents/teachers to also branch out beyond childhood fears of the dark to other fears and ways to overcome them.

We feel this is a story for all lovers of books as you can find many ways to share and experience this story form a basic level of understanding to a deeper level of understanding in overcoming life's obstacles and fears.

Book Review: Gluten Free Me - Beckmin Goes to School

Title of Book: Gluten-Free Me, Beckmin Goes to School

Author: Christy E. Bykowski
Publisher: Halo Publishing, Int.
ISBN Number: ISBN 13: 978-1-61244-228-0
Genre: Children
Publication Date: January 2014

Synopsis of book: “Beckmin goes to School” is meant to raise awareness for celiac disease and the everyday challenges children with celiac disease face in their otherwise normal activities.  As diagnosis of celiac disease increases, education, awareness, and understanding will be the keys to making celiac kids feel normal and included. Written for children to help them express and understand celiac disease, the book is a wonderful tool for children and adults alike.

Our thoughts: This is a great book for families with celiac kids. Beckmin helps these young children understand they are not different from others, they just have an allergy they need to make others aware of. As Beckmin goes throughout his day, he learns how to make friends, turn situations of bullying into a learning experiences for those around him and doesn't let his allergy stop him from enjoying all the wonderful things kids do in school.

We found this book to be very well written. The illustrations are a perfect fit and add to the positive themes throughout the book.

Book Discussions with Fran Lewis - Thrillers, Story Lines & More

Blog Talk Radio: Book Discussion With Host Fran Lewis - Thrillers, Story lines & More the Featured WorldOfInkNetwork | Books - Podcasts - http://www.blogtalkradio.com/worldofinknetwork/2014/01/23/book-discussion-with-host-fran-lewis--thrillers-story-lines-more
Fran's guest on January 23 at 4PM EST 3PM CST  will be Stephen A.Enna and Dennis J Wooten.
When authors Stephen A. Enna and Dennis J Wootten penned their wildly successful political thriller, Aloha in 2011, about a gay American president who brokers a deal to sell Hawaii to China to pay off the national debt and raise 13 trillion dollars, little did they envision that the book would spawn a popular trilogy and that it would eventually lead them to publish the second half of the series.
Shalom! Is the first book in the new series and follows with the familiar themes and story lines that made the Aloha! trilogy so popular with readers. Shalom! also revisits favorite characters from the first trilogy as America heads into an uncertain future...sound familiar?
